England's licensing landscape is a patchwork: mandatory HMO rules apply nationwide, while hundreds of councils run their own selective and additional schemes, often street by street. It is genuinely hard for a landlord to know where they stand, and hard for a council to see the full picture of who is compliant.
PRSCheck maps every active and upcoming scheme in England to the areas it covers, layered on the national rules. The same dataset powers both a simple consumer check and a professional enforcement platform, two front doors to one source of truth.
Where our data comes from
Government-backed, cross-referenced, verified.
Every result is built from official sources: local authority licensing designations, ONS council and ward boundaries, the government's EPC register for addresses, and UK housing legislation (the Housing Act 2004 and its statutory instruments). We cross-reference schemes against each council's own published designation and record the date we verified it.
Many schemes are designated at street or part-ward level, so a licence can apply to one address and not the one next door. That is exactly why a postcode-level answer is not enough, and why the paid report resolves your specific property and cites its official source.
